FINDING STRENGTH IN PAIN

Tue Sep 2, 2008, 7:50 AM
I speak of a feeling that I can sense and see in everyone’s eyes. Even at least once in our lives, we experienced this certain feeling, and I speak as a person who has been there, too. Pain. No matter how we hide it, sometimes, it becomes even more evident. But then, I also stand as someone who was able to get past it, and is willing to conquer more. For without pain, I would not be where I am right now. Because I got hurt, I had the will to persevere. And I am telling you now; you will have that motivation, too, and it all starts within you.

Pain is normal. Sometimes we cry about it, sometimes we get angry more than hurt. During these times, our hearts ache like we just wanted to let go and stop living. It feels like the pain takes away all the hope that is left of us. It is very hard to conceal, for pain becomes visible in the things that we do, the way we deal with people and ourselves and in the way we envision our entire lives. People or certain circumstances may have caused that pain, or we might have caused it ourselves. We release pain in our own ways, and sometimes we simply deny it. It is a part of life. However, it makes a certain difference with the way we handle it.

What we hardly know is that through pain, we actually become stronger people. As we shed tears for the hurt that we feel, we secretly build a tougher foundation of our personality. We become more and more ready for whatever is in store in our lives. We feel that we are braver to face more stinging in our hearts, because we have learned how to deal with it the first time we came face to face with the hurt. The deeper the cut, the tougher we become. Also, it is all in the matter of dealing with the pain and learning how to heal. I belong to a broken family. The process had been so hard especially for me, and I grew up feeling bitter and angry with my father. As time passed, I learned how to heal, I have learned how to forgive as well. Our family might not have been saved, but I was able to save myself from ruining my own life and my relationship with my father. I cannot say that I have been completely healed, but I can say that I am stronger, and I am moving on.

When in pain, the very first person that we come to for the process of healing is none other than ourselves. For it is within each of us where we could find the best friend and the finest helping hand in the world. If we don’t help ourselves, then it would be harder for others to help us. Even if we feel that we are being misled upon having pain sear our lives, what we should really do is keep our heads up high and keep on moving. Never stop having faith and never cease trying, of course keeping in mind that God will never give us something that we cannot bear. God lets us experience pain in our lives because He knows that we are strong and that we are to gain something good from it.

The pain that we feel in our lives is just a part of our being imperfect, one of our very characteristics that we have to keep in mind. However, it is in our imperfection that we become humans. And being human is being beautiful. We live to experience, and pain is one of them. Pain is just something we encounter, and then later we pass through. After that, we also have the opportunity to experience relief and strength and happiness. Strength is never measured by denying pain, but rather accepting it and dealing with it. Pain could leave us weak, only if we decide it to do so. We should never be distracted by the occurrence of it, but rather, be inspired and strengthened all the more. In the end, what matters is how we have carried ourselves, how we have lugged the burden, and then feel a lot better in spite of it all.
